WEEK OF 07/31/2017 - P90X3 - ROUND 6 - WEEK 3

MONDAY - JULY 31, 2017 - P90X3 - Total Synergistics

I thought about taking a week off to regroup mentally. I'm totally unfocused, especially on the nutrition part. When I got home, I decided to slow down my thoughts and tough it out. With that attitude, the workout actually went OK. I just took it one move at a time. They weren't all perfect, but I felt better doing it. Now, to conquer the nutrition.

Time: 30 minutes; Calories Burned: 248; Avg Heart Rate: 125; Max Heart Rate: 150.

TUESDAY - AUGUST 1, 2017 - P90X3 - Agility X

Once again, I just took it one move at a time. I also didn't put down any targets. The workout just seemed to flow a lot smoother. I even got a few plyo pushups in at the end.

Time: 30 minutes; Calories Burned: 265; Avg Heart Rate: 108; Max Heart Rate: 148.

WEDNESDAY - AUGUST 2, 2017 - P90X3 - The Challenge

I picked 20 pushups and 4 pullups again, the same as last week. The idea again was to do them slow, and use a bigger range of motion than trying to rush through them with little range of motion. Last week I almost got all the sets of pullups in without coming off the var. Today, I didn't raise that number because I wanted to totally conquer 4 before I moved up to more. I did all sets today without coming off the bar, so that's good. Even though I picked 20 as my pushup number, I did 25 on the first set because I was feeling OK, and they were slower and controlled. I then did 25 on each set afterwards. I never went to my knees, but there were many mid-set breaks. All in all, a good workout.

Time: 30 minutes; Calories Burned: 175; Avg Heart Rate: 111; Max Heart Rate: 138.

THURSDAY - AUGUST 3, 2017 - P90X3 - X3 Yoga

I started this a bit later than usual, because I got home later tonight. I tried to relax and take it one step at a time, as I had been with the other workouts lately, but it didn't work as well. It was really humid and I was sweating more than usual, so I was a bit uncomfortable and not concentrating as much as I should have. Still, it wasn't that bad. My balance still isn't good, but I keep trying.

Time: 30 minutes; Calories Burned: 123; Avg Heart Rate: 106; Max Heart Rate:126.

FRIDAY - AUGUST 4, 2017 - P90X3 - CVX

I played golf this morning, so mt legs were a bit sore. It's super humid in the house and hard to stay cool, so I really wasn't looking forward to this workout. I pulled out the 8 lb medicine ball I usually use for this routine, then decided I'd distract myself from the soreness and heat by trying something new, so I decided to use a 10 lb dumbbell instead of the ball. The first move, the Press Jacks, are always tough for me, so I actually stopped a few times during the move to catch me breath. The March and Reaches were also killers for me. The second time through on the Press Jacks I started with a 5 lb weight for a few seconds, then went back to the 10, and did all the other moves with that weight. I even help a weight on the towel hops to change things up further. By the third set of moves my shoulders were really burning, but I finished it up. My energy and range of motion wasn't always there, but I made a sorry situation a little better by being a bid creative. One other thing that's happening that I should mention: I've always struggled with the nutrition aspect of this whole lifestyle. I don't cook as much as I should, so I wind up grabbing something fast, which is usually a worse choice. The heat is making me cook even less, so I'm really struggling with that. I need to get creative with that too, and nip the bad choices in the bud.

Time: 30 minutes; Calories Burned: 262; Avg Heart Rate: 124; Max Heart Rate: 146.

SATURDAY - AUGUST 5, 2017 - P90X3 - The Warrior

Good news is that the weather broke. The hot, humid weather has been replaced with some nice cool breezes. I'm still felling sluggish from the poor eating and my legs still feel a bit heavy, so I was putting this one off as long as I could today. I finally got it done in the early evening. I started off slow, but picked up the intensity as it went along, so that made me feel good. I need to eat better. One thing I have been noticing: This morning I had some cereal with milk (1%) on it. It really made me crash. I don't drink a lot of milk, usually only on cereal and not something I always have in the house. I might buy a box of cereal once a month. Because I don't use it everyday, it's not something I think about often, but I've often wondered if I was lactose intolerant. I know I'm feeling a lot more sluggish than usual today. I'll see how I feel next time I drink it.

Time: 30 minutes; Calories Burned: 203; Avg Heart Rate: 115; Max Heart Rate: 138.

SUNDAY - AUGUST 6, 2017 - P90X3 - X3 Ab Ripper

I got it done early. No problems. Didn't come of any of the moves. I can really feel it in my abs.

Time: 15 minutes; Calories Burned: 48; Avg Heart Rate: 94; Max Heart Rate: 128

SUNDAY WEIGH IN

Weight: 196.6 (+1.8 lbs)
Body Fat: 21.7% (+0.3%)

No control over what I'm eating. Stress eating. Basically, an "I don't care" attitude.

THOUGHTS FOR THE WEEK

I'm not sure what to say. The vicious circle is in full swing. I'm eating bad because I'm stressed and depressed because I'm eating bad. I need to find my "purpose" again.

WEEK OF 07/24/2017 - P90X3 - ROUND 6 - WEEK 2

MONDAY - JULY 24, 2017 - P90X3 - Total Synergistics

I'm feeling a little less sluggish, but still not great. My brain still isn't into it, and this is not my favorite routine. I used 50 lbs again on the Releve'-Plie's, but lost my balance half way through and stopped, instead of getting back into it and finishing the reps. On the next move, the Chin Up Circle Crunches I also gave up early, because my elbow is really sore, and I didn't want to aggravate it. I got through all of the other moves OK, but was not killing myself.

Time: 30 minutes; Calories Burned: 224; Avg Hear Rate: 124; Max Heart Rate: 144.

TUESDAY - JULY 25, 2017 - P90X3 - Agility X

I'm feeling a bit better today, both physically and mentally. Still a ways to go, but it's a move in the right direction. The workout wasn't my best, but I wasn't dreading every minute of it either. I was really struggling with my balance on a lot of the moves, but that's usual. It's just not there. I also struggled with the Plyo Pushups at the end. It's strange for me. Almost every time I get to that exercise, I am almost frozen. It's like I physically can't do it. I'm in plank, and can't get down to do a pushup, let alone a moving plyo one. I don't know if it's mental, or just plain physical exhaustion. I honestly can't tell. As weird as this sounds, it's almost like an out of body experience. I'll try concentrating on it more next time, just to see what happens.

Time: 30 minutes; Calories Burned: 242; Avg Heart Rate: 118; Max Heart Rate: 144.

WEDNESDAY - JULY 26, 2017 - P90X3 - The Challenge

Before the workout I came up with an idea to do less reps than last week but do them slower and more controlled. Last week my numbers were 5 pullups and 25 pushups. I really struggle with pullups, so I was coming off the bar a lot, then going back up to get to the 5 reps. I felt I might be able to do 4 without coming off the bar as much. Today I only came off once in the 8 sets. I was doing them slower, with more range of motion, and less jumping up on the bar when I'd come off. On the pushups, I did them much slower, went deeper, and felt them. It's something to build on. Now I can increase those numbers with better range.

Time: 30 minutes; Calories Burned: 161; Avg Heart Rate: 106; Max Heart Rate: 126.

THURSDAY - JULY 27, 2017 - P90X3 - X3 Yoga

I was looking to building off of yesterday's effort by slowing down, relaxing, and concentrating more on the movements. That didn't happen. When I came home I ate a bowl and a half of cereal that made me feel real bloated. My balance was worse than usual, and I could barely do any of the twising movements. I've been drinking too much Pepsi at work, so much that I can almost smell it coming out of my pores. Because I don't handle caffeine real well, it makes me a bit jittery, so my concentration during the workout was really bad. I realize I have to change things. I'll just have to start changing my mindset, and concentrating on better things.

Time: 30 minutes; Calories Burned: 86; Avg Heart Rate: 100; Max Heart Rate: 115.

FRIDAY - JULY 28, 2017 - P90X3 - CVX

I had to squeeze this one in between golf and an evening commitment. It wasn't my best workout, but  I was trying to put some effort into it. I didn't always increase the speed or range of motion when he was asking for it.

Time: 30 minutes; Calories Burned: 289; Avg Heart Rate: 121; Max Heart Rate: 150.

SATURDAY - JULY 29, 2017 - P90X3 - The Warrior

I hadn't eaten very good the last few days, so I was a bit sluggish. Mid-way through the workout I became real frustrated because I was laboring on moves I shouldn't have been. I'm wondering why I'm killing myself on these workouts when I'm going to eat like crap.

Time: 30 minutes; Calories Burned: 216; Avg Heart Rate: 117; Max Heart Rate: 139.

SUNDAY - JULY 30, 2017 - P90X3 - X3 Ab Ripper

I was feeling pretty good this morning, so I did my weigh in, then got this one done. Not much to say. I got all the moves in without coming out of any of them. I can feel the tightness in my abs.

Time: 15 minutes; Calories Burned: 48; Avg Heart Rate: 97' Max Heart Rate: 124.

SUNDAY WEIGH IN

Weight: 194.8 (+0,4 lbs)
Body Fat: 21.4% (+0,2%)

Expected. I had a few bad binges this week, but it could have been worse. I stopped myself a few times.

THOUGHTS FOR THE WEEK

I'm not happy with the eating, but I'm not going to beat myself up over it. The workouts went well, but there were a few instances where I was laboring because of the poor eating.

WEEK OF 07/17/2017 - P90X3 - ROUND 6 - WEEK 1

Back at it. It was a two week break since I finished Max 30. I've been eating poorly the last two months or so, undoing a lot of the good I did since the beginning of the year. Last week I put on 3 lbs, am starting to feel it, and decided enough was enough. I want to go back to the calorie plan I'd been using earlier in the year. I think I also need to concentrate on eating better calories. I was going to give myself another week break with the workouts but decided to jump right into it again. I wasn't sure which program I wanted to do, but it came down to: 22 Minute Hard Corp, which I have, but have never done, Body Beast, Hammer and Chisel, or P90X3. I could be wrong, but 22 minutes doesn't seem like enough of a workout to me, at least mentally, so I decided against that. I don't think Body Beast made me that much stronger when I did it before, so I decided against that, and I didn't want to listen to Autumn in Hammer and Chisel, so I decided to do another round of P90X3. It seems to be my go to program lately. I'll get back to the others at some point, and if I'd waited another week, I might have made a different choice, but this is how I felt today.

My starting Weight: 195.4
My starting Body Fat: 21.6%

MONDAY - JULY 17, 2017 - P90X3 - Total Synergistics

This one has a few moves in it that just wear me out, most notably the Crawly Crab Pushups. Surprisingly, I got them all in. I think I'm still in OK shape from doing Max 30, even with the two week break. I don't think I hit the pause button at all, even though I usually do at some point during this workout. I even used a 50 lb weight on the Releve' Squats. I always used to use 25 lbs, but the 50 was sitting there, so I though why not. No problems with it. I think it actually made the exercise easier because it kept me down and wobbling while on my toes. All in all, I felt pretty good during the workout.

Time: 30 minutes; Calories Burned: 234; Avg Heart Rate: 125; Max Heart Rate: 143.

TUESDAY - JULY 18, 2017 - P90X3 - Agility X

The first half of this workout is a piece of cake. The second half is a bit tougher, and by the time I get the the Plyo Pushups at the end, I'm toast. I did OK on most of the moves, except for the Joel Jumps, because I can't balance, and the 3/4 Run, because I can't move that fast and give up with about 13 seconds left. I try to get past that point every time I do this thing, but he's yelling direction changes so fast, I just get frustrated and give up. I did, however, get in a few Plyo Pushups at the end, which I normally don;t do.

Time: 30 minutes; Calories Burned: 269; Avg Heart Rate: 123; Max Heart Rate: 146.

WEDNESDAY - JULY 19, 2017 - P90X3 - The Challenge

My numbers were 25 pushups and 5 pullups. I had no problems with any of the pushups. I thought I'd be OK on the pullups, even though I hadn't done any in over 3 months, but I was wrong. I only did a couple sets of 5 without coming off the bar. The rest I was doing three, then one, then one, or something similar to that. I've always struggled with pullups, but today was a real struggle, Hopefully, I'll get better as I get more into the program. I also wonder why I can't do better at them. Is it grip strength, weak back, or just poor form. Also, just a mention on the Fit Bit Heart Rate Numbers. I just did over 200 pushups and 40 pullups in 30 minutes, and I only burned 188 calories? Something doesn't seem right.

Time: 30 minutes; Calories Burned: 188; Avg Heart Rate: 133; Max Heart Rate:147.

THURSDAY - JULY 20, 2017 - P90X3 - X3 Yoga

I had bought a new yoga mat last week, so I was a bit anxious to try it. I'd always used a regular mat for yoga. It was a bit different, but not too much. The workout went OK. I was a bit rusty and not as flexible as I was a few months ago, but still not too bad. My balance postures still weren't great. After nine years of doing this, I sometimes think it's just magically going to "click in" one day, but that never happens. Why is that? Same thought as with the pullups from yesterday.

Time: 30 minutes; Calories Burned: 70; Avg Heart Rate: 93; Max Heart Rate: 127.

FRIDAY - JULY 21, 2017 - P90X3 - CVX

One of the reasons I write here is to express how I'm actually feeling. Right now, it's not good. I'm not happy with myself at all. My weight has been going up the past several weeks because I haven't been eating well, or sticking to my calorie count. It came to a head last weekend, so I decided to get back to the plan this week, along with starting this workout program. Yesterday, I pretty much just gave up on myself and went way over my calorie limit. Instead of writing it off as a bad day and regrouping, I ate three donuts this morning, two large cookies with my lunch, and an ice cream sandwich when I got home. Everything is recoverable, but I'm just feeling really disappointed in myself and feeling like all this effort doesn't matter. To top it off, my air conditioner broke the other day right in the middle of a humid streak we're having. I don't deal well with heat and humidity, so it's making me very irritable, as I feel like I can't escape it. Yes, I'm whining. There's people in a lot worse situations than I am right now. I realize that. Being without a/c isn't a big deal in any sense. I'm just feeling sorry for myself, which is just plain pathetic. I didn't feel like doing this workout today. I was feeling sluggish because of my eating, irritable because of the heat, and generally depressed, angry and unmotivated. The workout was horrible. On an intensity scale of 1 to 10, it was a three or a four. I was quitting on some of the moves, even the easier ones, simply because I didn't feel like doing them. On other ones, I was convincing myself I didn't have the energy to do them. Just bad, overall. I'll bounce back, but I have to find my reason again. As it stands right now, I'm doing all this because I feel I should be, not because I want to. That's not good.

Time: 30 minutes; Calories Burned: 286; Avg Heart Rate 129; Max Heart Rate: 148.

SATURDAY - JULY 22, 2017 - P90X3 - The Warrior

Another poor effort. I was lethargic, didn't want to do it. but went through the motions to get it done. So that's a positive. I could have just blown it off, but I don't do that. I'm going to try and relax and regroup over the next few days to get my mind right.

Time: 30 minutes; Calories Burned: 219; Avg Heart Rate: 118; Max Heart Rate: 145.

SUNDAY - JULY 23, 2017 - P90X3 - X3 Ab Ripper

I did OK. Got through the Speed Bikes without coming out of it.

Time: 15 minutes; Calories Burned: 66; Avg Heart Rate: 108; Max Heart Rate: 128.

SUNDAY WEIGH IN

Weight: 194.4 (-1.0 lb)
Body Fat: 21.2 % (0.4%)

Shocking! I figured I'd have put on at least three lbs. But, it gives me some motivation.

THOUGHTS FOR THE WEEK

I think I could have used another week or two of rest. I'm feeling like I jumped into this before I was mentally ready. Sometimes people never get mentally ready and will put things off forever, but I know myself, and would have gotten back into it at some point. I ate like crap, got myself depreseed, but got through it.

INSANITY: MAX 30 - ROUND 1 - WEEK 13 - WEEK OF 06/26/2017

**** My computer was still out of commission for the first part of the week. I couldn't remember my thoughts for each day, so only the stats are listed. ****

This is the final week of the program. I'll be doing the Bonus discs. There are two 15 minute Ab routines (360 Abs and Max Out Abs), a condensed 15 minute Max 30 routine (Max Out 15), and Sweat Fest, which is a 30 minute "classic" Insanity type routine, which I'd sampled a few times a few weeks ago.

MONDAY - JUNE 26, 2017 - INSANITY: MAX 30 - 360 Abs and Max Out 15

360 Abs - I didn't find it too difficult. I got through it OK.

Max Out 15 - This wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be. Because he was condensing things down to 15 minutes I thought he'd kill us, but he didn't. Most of the moves were what I considered to be of the "easier variety". He did finish it off strong though. The last two were tough.

360 Abs - Time: 15 minutes; Calories Burned; 106; Avg Heart Rate: 114; Max Heart Rate: 144
Max Out 15 - Time: 15 minutes; Calories Burned; 154; Avg Heart Rate: 130; Max Heart Rate: 153

TUESDAY - JUNE 27, 2017 - INSANITY: MAX 30 - Max Out Abs and Max Out 15

Max Out Abs - Again, I didn't find it too difficult. You did a standing move and then a similar move on the floor. The only real tough one was the speed "Genie Jumps", and they almost seemed out of place. I did have problems with the one move where I was tapping my knee to my hand in side plank because I kept losing my balance.

Max Out 15 - I did OK. It was the second time around and I knew what to expect'

Max Out Abs - Time: 15 minutes; Calories Burned; 134; Avg Heart Rate: 122; Max Heart Rate: 148
Max Out 15 - Time: 15 minutes; Calories Burned; 168; Avg Heart Rate: 131; Max Heart Rate: 153

WEDNESDAY - JUNE 28, 2017 - INSANITY: MAX 30 - Sweat Fest

I'd done this routine a few times during the first month as a second workout of the day. It's 30 minutes of Old School Insanity. There's a few tough sequences, especially in the third circuit, but I got through it fine.

Time: 30 minutes; Calories Burned; 276; Avg Heart Rate: 125; Max Heart Rate: 154

THURSDAY - JUNE 29, 2017 - INSANITY: MAX 30 - 360 Abs and Max Out 15

360 Abs - I did OK. I like it.

Max Out 15 - I'm still maxing out around 12:30.

360 Abs - Time: 15 minutes; Calories Burned; 100; Avg Heart Rate: 108; Max Heart Rate: 151
Max Out 15 - Time: 15 minutes; Calories Burned; 149; Avg Heart Rate: 128; Max Heart Rate: 167

FRIDAY - JUNE 30, 2017 - INSANITY: MAX 30 - Max Out Abs and Max Out 15

Max Out Abs - Same as Tuesday. Maxed Out during the side plank,

Max Out 15 - Final time doing it. Same results each of the four times I did it. Easy through the first 12 minutes. Max Out around 12:30, then struggle with the last two moves. This is a good routine.

Max Out Abs - Time: 15 minutes; Calories Burned; 129; Avg Heart Rate: 117; Max Heart Rate: 143
Max Out 15 - Time: 15 minutes; Calories Burned; 159; Avg Heart Rate: 133; Max Heart Rate: 148

SATURDAY - JULY 1, 2017 - INSANITY: MAX 30 - Sweat Fest

Last workout of the round. I got up early. Decided to go into the office to catch up on things because I'm way behind. Spent 6 hours there. When I finally got home I was feeling like crap. I had a sore throat and felt like I was coming down with a bug. I struggled with the early part of the workout and kept looking at the timer and wondering how I was going to make it through it, but I did. It wasn't my best effort, but I finished.

Time: 30 minutes; Calories Burned; 279; Avg Heart Rate: 125; Max Heart Rate: 151.

SUNDAY - JULY 2, 2017 - Rest

SUNDAY WEIGH IN

Weight: 190.2 (+1.8 lbs)
Body Fat: 20.2% (+0.2%)

Ate like crap.

THOUGHTS FOR THE WEEK

I liked the workouts. Most days were 15 minutes of abs and a 15 minute Max 30 style workout. Both of the ab workouts seemed do-able as I was doing them, but I could feel the tightness in my abs afterwards. I liked both of those workouts for those reasons. I might have liked Max Out Abs a bit better simply because of the standing vs floor concept, but not much more. Both Max Out 15 and Sweat Fest were also enjoyable. Effective, but not beat you over the head hard like the rest of the Max 30 workouts.

THOUGHTS ON THE PROGRAM

I had originally tried this program about 2 years ago. I had just lost one of my cats, sort of unexpectedly,  and my frame of mind wasn't the best. I'd never been a big fan of Shaun's workouts because they all seem the same, so all that compounded in me really, really hating the program, so I stopped in week three. After finishing P90X3 three months ago I was going to give my body a break and do some various cardio routines. I pulled out one of the Max 30 discs as a challenge, saw I could get through it, pulled out another the next day, saw it wasn't too bad, then did all the discs. I decided to do the eight week program in full, wondering if I'd get bored with it. It turns out I didn't. I even extended it from an eight week program to a thirteen week program because I wasn't done with it. Because my mind frame was different than it was two years ago, my experience was totally different. I liked it. I looked upon it as a challenge each day. I don't recall ever having a day where I absolutely dreaded having to do a workout. The fact that it's only 30 minutes a day helped. I also found myself connecting with some of the cast members. I couldn't always keep up with all of them, especially with some range of motion moves, due to my bad ankles and knees, but for the most part I hung with them. For a 59 year old guy I'm proud of that. I did lose exactly 3 pounds from when I began the program, but that is deceiving. At one point I was actually down 7.6 pounds, but got off my dedicated calorie counts and put some back on again. That was my fault.  As I'm typing this, I'm not sure what I'll be doing next, but do know I'm going to miss this program for a while. I'll come back to it though.
