P90X3 - ROUND 5 - WEEK 5 - WEEK OF 01/30/17

MONDAY - JANUARY 30, 2017 - P90X3 - Eccentric Upper

This one tires me out a bit, and I took 2 two or three minute breaks during the workout today. I used 25 lbs on most of the moves, 10s or 15s on a couple others. All the pullups were unassisted and I only got 4 to 6 reps in on each of those. I'm still very weak on those, buy trying to get better.

Time: 30 minutes; Calories Burned: 232; Avg Heart Rate: 117; Max Heart Rate: 143.

TUESDAY - JANUARY 31, 2017 - P90X3 - Triometrics

Once again I did better than I had in the past. There are points in this workout when I'm usually out of gas. Not today, until the last few minutes. I had full range of motion when I could. The balance moves on one leg still sucked, but I tried my best.

Time: 30 minutes; Calories Burned: 252; Avg Heart Rate: 116; Max Heart Rate: 143.

WEDNESDAY - FEBRUARY 1, 2017 - P90X3 - Incinerator

I did pretty good. I normally have been using 25 lbs on the heavier weight moves and 15's on the lighter ones. Today I did the same, but tried 50's on the "A" Presses. I got eight of the ten reps in on those, but the weights started drifting out on the last rep so I didn't try to fight them back in and risk hurting myself. Otherwise I felt stronger than usual. i didn't get all of the Burnout in because the gloves I'm using for pullups rip into the webbing between my fingers when doing pushups. I have to figure that one out.

Time: 30 minutes; Calories Burned: 203; Avg Heart Rate: 108; Max Heart Rate: 137. (Those numbers seem very low.)

THURSDAY - FEBRUARY 2, 2017 - P90X3 - X3 Yoga

I tried concentrating on my breathing today, but that didn't last too long. I wasn't sure when I should be exhaling and when I should be inhaling. It actually made things worse. but that was the only downside. My balance was a tad bit better than usual. I was actually trying to get into some of the Balance Poses I normally can't, and then was able to hold them for longer than usual. The highlight, though, was I was able to touch my feet to the ground in Plow. I haven't done that in years. I'm leaning out a bit and that allowed me to do that. I'm very happy about that.

Time: 30 minutes; Calories Burned: 138; Avg Heart Rate: 102; Max Heart Rate: 122.

FRIDAY - FEBRUARY 3, 2017 - P90X3 - Eccentric Lower

This one seems like one of the easier X3 workouts to me. However, I must clarify that by saying I have to modify a lot of the moves because my balance is so bad. If I wasn't holding onto a chair or tapping my foot, or limiting my range of motion, it would be much tougher. My balance was very bad from the get go. I was losing it in the warmup. However, I did the best I could and didn't give up.

Time: 30 minutes; Calories Burned: 185; Avg Heart Rate: 106; Max Heart Rate: 131.

SATURDAY - FEBRUARY 4, 2017 - P90X3 - MMX

MMX is a love / hate workout for me. I love the martial arts combinations but hate the enormous amounts of Sprawls (Burpees) that are involved. My legs felt real heavy at the beginning and I'm wondering if it's a carryover from last night's Eccentric Lower workout. Overall I did OK, but dropped to my knees midway through the Burnout Round and didn't get back up. Because I felt a bit guilty about that I did 12 punch/sprawl combo moves after finishing the cooldown. My FitBit says I burned 350 calories which is way more than any routine I've done since I got it about a month ago.

Time: 30 minutes; Calories Burned: 350; Avg Heart Rate: 133; Max Heart Rate: 159.

SUNDAY - FEBRUARY 5, 2017 - P90X3 - X3 Ab Ripper

This was about as well as I've ever done on this workout. I may have put my foot back a split second earlier than what he said on one of the Plank Crunches, but other than that I completed each rep without coming out of any of them. I actually felt like I was fit.

Time: 15 minutes: Calories Burned: 88; Avg Heart Rate: 108; Max Heart Rate: 130.

SUNDAY WEIGH IN

Weight: 199.8 (-2.2 lbs)
Body Fat: 22.9% (-0.4%)

First time I've been below 200 lbs since March of 2015, so that feels good. The eating plan I'm doing is working.

THOUGHTS FOR THE WEEK

I'm happy I'm sticking to the plan. The workouts went well too, as there were many times I've been exceeding what I've done in the past. I actually feel like I'm moving forward instead of just going through the motions and trading water.

Monday, January 23, 2017

P90X3 - ROUND 5 - WEEK 4 - WEEK OF 01/23/17

MONDAY - JANUARY 23, 2017 - P90X3 - Isometrix

Well, that was ugly. I was having problems with all the plank moves. For some reason my shoulders were sore and the plank moves were burning them up something fierce. Except for one Side Arm Balance, I couldn't hold any of the moves the full 45 seconds. Most times I was coming out and going back into the move throughout the 45 seconds. I admit there were plenty of times I gave up before I should have. On the standing moves, my balance was better than usual for the first 3 or 4 sets, then it went away. Not my best effort.

Time: 30 minutes; Calories Burned: 132; Avg Heart Rate: 106; Max Heart Rate: 123.

TUESDAY - JANUARY 24, 2017 - P90X3 - Dynamix

I felt pretty good going in. Took a small nap before starting and work up refreshed, not groggy. This may have been the best I've ever done on this workout. I felt pretty limber. I was getting all the moves in without losing my balance too much.

Time: 30 minutes; Calories Burned: 115; Avg Heart Rate: 101; Max Heart Rate: 130.

WEDNESDAY - JANUARY 25, 2017 - P90X3 - Accelerator

I've probably said this before, but I think this is the toughest cardio routine Tony has done. Usually, I'm going down to my knees way before the minute is up. Today, I pushed myself. There were only a few moves I didn't make in entirely through, on those moves I went farther than I had previously. I still have a ways to go on this one, but it's a start.

Time: 30 minutes; Calories Burned: 280; Avg Heart Rate: 125; Max Heart Rate: 151.

THURSDAY - JANUARY 26, 2017 - P90X3 - Pilates X

Once again, I did better than I usually do. I'm feeling a bit more flexible, which is helping. I even did some, but not all, of the Side Plank moves in an actual Side Plank, instead of resting on my hip. Still eating well.

Time: 30 minutes; Calories Burned: 81; Avg Heart Rate: 95; Max Heart Rate: 124.
NOTE: Still using the FitBit as my heart rate monitor. The Avg and Max Heart Rates aren't too far off from the Polar Heart Rate Monitor I'd been using for years, but the Calories Burned is a LOT lower. About 25% - 50% lower.

FRIDAY - JANUARY 27, 2017 - P90X3 - Decelerator

In following the official P90X3 schedule, this workout is not scheduled during the Recovery Week. CVX is here instead. Decelerator doesn't appear until Phase 3. However, I want to keep the schedule close to the original P90X with it's phases, so I put Decelerator here. It's probably not a "recovery" workout, but it works for me here. It's always been tough for me, but today I was actually looking forward to it because I've been doing better on the most of the workouts than I had it the past. Today was no exception. It wasn't pretty by any means, but I did my best and felt good about it, even though I know there's a lot of room for improvement. I still can't do Cracker Crane Pushups, but I tried.

Time: 30 minutes; Calories Burned: 225; Avg Heart Rate:114; Max Heart Rate:142.

SATURDAY - JANUARY 28, 2017 - P90X3 - X3 Yoga

For some reason, I've been feeling very sluggish all day. Took a few naps, but that didn't help. I finally got this in, It went OK, but I was laboring early on. My balance was a tad bit better than usual, so that's a positive.

Time: 30 minutes; Calories Burned: 164; Avg Heart Rate: 105; Max Heart Rate: 125.

SUNDAY - JANUARY 29, 2017 - Rest

SUNDAY WEIGH IN

Weight: 202.0 (-2.0 lbs)
Body Fat: 23.3% (-0.6%)

Both are good numbers. I stuck to my plan this week.

THOUGHTS FOR THE WEEK

The workouts went well. On a lot of them I did better on the individual routines than I had in the past. I'm sure eating better helped that.

P90X3 - ROUND 5 - WEEK 3 - WEEK OF 01/16/17

MONDAY - JANUARY 16, 2017 - P90X3 - Total Synergistics

I was very pleased with the workout today. I didn't let my mind tell me I couldn't do things, and I pushed to get as many reps in as possible. I got all 23 of the Crawly Plyo Pushups in. I got all of the Boat to Plow moves in, though some weren't real pretty. My balance still sucks, but that's not from a lack of effort. I'm also eating well today.

Time: 30 minutes; Calories Burned: 278; Avg Heart Rate: 128; Max Heart Rate:151,

TUESDAY - JANUARY 17, 2017 - P90X3 - Agility X

I kind of feel like I can only go so far with this workout because my balance is so bad. Even moves where you are stepping forwards and backwards isn't easy for me because when my foot lands my ankles roll in a bit and it takes me a split second to recover. Fast balancing moves are almost impossible. Even the "high stepping" moves are difficult for me. It is what it is. We all have our weaknesses. Just do the best you can. Ate well again today. I'm trying to track things a bit with the FitBit.

Time: 30 minutes; Calories Burned: 263; Avg Heart Rate: 122; Max Heart Rate: 149.

WEDNESDAY - JANUARY 18, 2017 - P90X3 - The Challenge

Target: 30 pushups, 6 pullips. Once again, I hit all the pushups with no breaks. I hit all the pullups too, but had to come down from the bar several times. I did feel stronger on them though. Still eating well. I don't think the FitBit is recording my calories burned correctly. I know I burned way more than 189.

Time: 30 minutes; Calories Burned: 189; Avg Heart Rate: 114; Max Heart Rate:147.

THURSDAY - JANUARY 19, 2017 - P90X3 - X3 Yoga

I'm finding myself looking forward to Yoga days because some of these other workouts are beating the crap out of me. I did OK today. My attitude was good. My balance wasn't.

Time: 30 minutes; Calories Burned: 145; Avg Heart Rate: 108; Max Heart Rate: 128.

FRIDAY - JANUARY 20, 2017 - P90X3 - CVX

Good workout! I just did the best I could and was pleased with it.

Time: 30 minutes; Calories Burned: 298; Avg Heart Rate: 129; Max Heart Rate:151.

SATURDAY - JANUARY 21, 2017 - P90X3 - The Warrior

I can't say I was looking forward to this one, but was up for the challenge. I did all right. There are a few moves that just gas me, and I can't get through them. During the Elevator Pushups he starts moving real fast with about 15 seconds left. I go to my hands and knees every time. On the Leg Scissors moves, I'm so out of breath from the previous move that I can barely get my shoulders off the ground, and on the last move I'm doubled over in exhaustion by the time the spins come. These are areas I can look to improve on and conquer someday. One other thing: I've been eating pretty good all week, tracking my calories with my FitBit. I certainly feel better, and today I noticed my workout sweats were starting to slide down my hips a bit.

Time: 30 minutes; Calories Burned: 250; Avg Heart Rate: 123; Max Heart Rate: 145.

SUNDAY - JANUARY 22, 2017 - P90X3 - X3 Ab Ripper

Again, I wasn't looking forward to doing this one. It wasn't my best effort. I came out of a lot of the reps early, including Dolphin Hops, Plank Crunches, and the C-Y Reaches, where he seems to blabber incessently between reps.

Time: 15 minutes; Calories Burned: 78; Avh Heart Rate: 107; Max Heart Rate: 128.

SUNDAY WEIGH IN

Weight: 204.0 (-3.4 lbs)
Body Fat: 23.9% (-0.6%)

I stuck to a calorie count this week and logged my food intake. It was a big eye opener and I'm happy with the results. It shows it can be done.

THOUGHTS FOR THE WEEK

This week was primarily concentrating on what and how much I ate. Obviously it gives me optimism going forward.

P90X3 - ROUND 5 - WEEK 2 - WEEK OF 01/09/17

NOTE: My Heart Rate Monitor died before the start of the Round last week (last week's stats were guesstimates based on previous workouts) . New battery didn't help, so I needed to get a new one. I decided to get a Fit Bit Charge 2. It was a bit more than a regular heart rate monitor, but it does so much more. I just need to see what it can do and put it to good use.

MONDAY - JANUARY 9, 2017 - P90X3 - Total Synergistics

This one humbled me last week as I had to take numerous breaks just to get through it. Not so much today. I didn't take any breaks. The move that kills me early on is the Crawly Plyo Pushups. They do 24. I crashed today after 16 which may have allowed me to be stronger the rest of the workout. I'm not sure if missing those 8 reps was the noble thing to do, but I made up for them by doing more on later moves. FitBit said I burned 25 calories. Using my old Polar heart rate monitor, I was usually in the 325 range, even though my average heart rate was similar on both devices. We'll see what happens in the future with other workouts. It is what it is, but it's just something I like to track.

Time: 30 minutes; Calories Burned: 252; Avg Heart Rate: 126; Max Heart Rate: 152.

TUESDAY - JANUARY 10, 2017 - P90X3 - Agility X

Slightly above mu average Agility X workout today. I went at it a bit harder and tried forcing myself to do moves that I'm very uncoordinated with, like the spinning plyo jumps. Still was out of breath by the time I got to the plyo pushups at the end.

Time: 30 minutes; Calories Burned: 249; Avg Heart Rate: 118; Max Heart Rate: 140.

WEDNESDAY - JANUARY 11, 207 - P90X3 - The Challenge

TARGET: 28 pushups; 6 Pullups. I hit all my pushups with no problems. I did all the pullups too, but had to come off the bar a lot, and some were ugly.

Time: 30 minutes; Calories Burned: 211; Avg Hear Rate: 118; Max Heart Rate: 148.

THURSDAY - JANUARY 12, 2017 - P90X3 - X3 Yoga

Well ... I went in with good intentions. I wanted to stay relaxed and enjoy. That went south in a hurry. I had absolutely no balance on either foot had no flexibility. Not a good combo. I'm not going to dwell on it. One of those days.

Time: 30 minutes; Calories Burned: 116; Avg Heart Rate: 102; Max Heart Rate: 122.

FRIDAY - JANUARY 13, 2017 - P90X3 - CVX

Used an 8 lb medicine ball as my weight. I did OK. Nothing notable. I felt my right calf muscle tweak on the first move, so I took it a touch easy on some of the moves. I also ditched the weights on the Crescent/Chair move near the end. I find my form is really bad if I use the weight, so I thought I'd try it without it. My form was definitely better, but I'm not sure if I was keeping my heart rate up. It's a bit of a trade off. It's obvious my heart rate and calories burned are tracking lower with the FitBit than they were with the Polar Heart Rate Monitor. I was reading a few articles on this yesterday and it is a common thing with the FitBit. A suggestion was to wear it farther up the wrist and make it wear tighter. I tried that and it seemed to show higher numbers, but not like before. I'll keep pplaying with it.

Time: 30 minutes; Calories Burned:286; Avg Heart Rate: 128; Max Heart Rate:151.

SATURDAY - JANUARY 14, 2017 - P90X3 - The Warrior

I wasn't dreading this one today, but I wasn't feeling really optimistic on how I was going to do either. I did get through it. It wasn't perfect by any means, and I didn't get all the reps in, but I finished it, with no breaks.

Time: 30 minutes; Calories Burned: 275; Avg Heart Rate: 127; Max Heart Rate: 149.

SUNDAY - JANUARY 15, 2017 - P90X3 - X3 Ab Ripper

Poor effort. I was a bit bummed after the weight gain this week, so my motivation was way down. I came out of a lot of the "ISO-Hold" moves early, because I didn't feel like holding them. Move on.

Time: 15 minutes; Calories Burned: 63; Avg Heart Rate: 111; Max Heart Rate: 121.

SUNDAY WEIGH IN

Weight: 207.4 (+1.4 lbs)
Body Fat: 24.5% (+0.4%)

I are a lot yesterday, and not all of it was good, which pretty much summed up the entire week. Too much "cheating".

THOUGHTS FOR THE WEEK

This round was supposed to be a concentrated effort on the workouts and the nutrition. I slipped badly on both. I'm finding the nutrition is the key. If I eat well, I take pride in my workouts. If I eat poorly, I just go through the motions on the workouts. This week was the latter.

Monday, January 2, 2017

P90X3 - ROUND 5 - WEEK 1 - WEEK OF 01/02/17

It's been a while since I last posted, so I thought I'd start dong it again. It keeps me more focused and accountable for what I'm doing. Since last March I've done two rounds of P90X3, finishing the second one up two weeks ago. I'll be starting another one today. During the last round I noticed I was toning up really nice, especially around the shoulders, and I can get through the 30 minute workouts without dreading doing them all day.

A few areas I really need improvement on are my nutrition and my flexibility. My nutrition has always sucked. I just can't commit to it, and most of that has to do with poor (actually non-existent) meal planning. My flexibility has really taken a hit the last few years. Much of it has to do with the extra weight I'm carrying. I used to able to do "Plow"fairly easily, now I can't get my feet anywhere near the floor. I can't even get close to doing Seated Spinal Twists anymore either. Both are reminders I need to change things.

Starting Weight: 206.2; Starting Body Fat: 24.5%

MONDAY - JANUARY 2, 2017 - P90X3 - Total Synergistics

This workout has always worn me out, but today was humbling to say the least. After the third move (a pullup move), I was gassed. I was taking all kinds of breaks, which I normally don't do. It took me at least 45 minutes to get through it. It may have been because I hadn't eaten before starting it, or maybe the two week layoff, or maybe I'm just really out of shape. I don't know. However, I did my best, except on the Boat to Plow move, where I kind of gave up out of fatigue and exasperation. One positive: Last round I started doing all the pull ups unassisted. For Christmas I got some new workout gloves that brace my wrists, and they felt good.

Time: 30 minutes; Calories Burned: 330; Avg Heart Rate: 128; Max Heart Rate: 210.

TUESDAY - JANUARY 3, 2017 - P90X3 - Agility X

Much better than yesterday, as I took no breaks. This one is tough for me as I simply can't balance on a lot of the moves (Joel Jumps are almost impossible for me), and I'm uncoordinated in other. By the time I get to the Plyo Pushups, which is the last move, I'm gassed, and can barely get the walking pushups in, let alone the plyo ones.Overall, an average Agility X for me.

Time: 30 minutes; Calories Burned: 320; Avg Heart Rate: 122; Max Heart Rate: 158.

WEDNESDAY - JANUARY 4, 2017 - P90X3 - The Challenge

Target: 25 pushups, 5 pullups. I did OK, hitting my target on all the moves. Om a few of the pullups I had to come off the bar after three reps, then getting back on and finishing up the remaining two, usually one at a time. Pullups are still very tough for me, almost embarrassingly tough, but I still do my best. The new workout gloves seem to help a lot, noticeably in the wrists today. I usually go at a quicker speed than they do on the video, to eliminate a lot of down time between moves, but it works out OK. I just get going again at the Burnout.

Time: 30 minutes; Calories Burned: 300; Avg Heart Rate: 124; Max Heart Rate: 210.

THURSDAY - JANUARY 5, 2016 - P90X3 - X3 Yoga

One of my goals this round is to get some of my flexibility back. I did OK. I felt a bit more flexible doing this than last round, but I still have a long way to go. Baby steps.

Time: 30 minutes; Calories Burned: 230; Avg Heart Rate: 109; Max Heart Rate: 124.

FRIDAY - JANUARY 6, 2017 - P90x3 - CVX

I surprised myself a bit on this one. It was probably one of the best CVX workouts I've ever done. I used an 8 lb medicine ball as my weight. I changed speed and range of motion on most of the moves when he asked for it. Overall, I'm very happy with today's effort.

Time: 30 minutes; Calories Burned: 360; Avg Heart Rate: 135; Max Heart Rate: 158.

SATURDAY - JANUARY 7, 2017 - P90X3 - The Warrior

This workout doesn't look hard on paper, but it always gasses me, I was determined going in not to let it beat me..Some moves I did better than in the past, but there were a few that I just couldn't finish. Something to improve on in the future.

Time: 30 minutes; Calories Burned: 306; Avg Heart Rate: 123; Max Heart Rate: 211.

SUNDAY - JANUARY 8, 2017 - P90X3 - X3 Ab Ripper

I got this done in the morning. Felt good. Only came of out one move for a second or two (Plank Crunches), otherwise I kept pace. Note: Dolphin Hops are killers. Being the second move of the workout tires you out for the rest of them.

Time:  15 minutes; Calories Burned: 131; Avg Heart Rate: 108; Max Heart Rate: 131.

SUNDAY WEIGH IN

Weight: 206.0 (-0.2 lbs)
Body Fat: 24.1% (-0,3%)

I was hoping the wight drop would have been more, as I'd \eaten Pretty good (but no where near perfect). I did eat a bag of cashews throughout the week and I know they are high in calories, so that might have had something to do with it. However, there was a 0.3% drop in body fat which means I'm doing something right.

THOUGHTS FOR THE WEEK

I'm pleased. It was a slow start on Monday, but after that I felt pretty good and the workouts seemed to go well. I feel better, more energized, and am happy with the direction of the eating..
