LES MILLS PUMP / COMBAT HYBRID - WEEK 6 - Week of 8/26/2013

MONDAY - AUGUST 26, 2013 - LES MILLS PUMP - Pump and Burn

Back to the Pump workouts. I continued where I left off by using 10's on each side during the warmup, and the using 30's on each side during the rest of the workout. I had to stop a few times during the Chest section as usual, and once or twice briefly during the back section. Other than that I was OK, but I was feeling it.

Time: 35 minutes; Calories Burned: 286; Avg Heart Rate: 113; Max Heart Rate: 220.

TUESDAY - AUGUST 27, 2013 - LES MILLS COMBAT - Combat 30: Kick Start

This was my first regular Combat workout. It started out slow and I was wondering if I was going to be bored to death, but it picked up after a while, and I actually enjoyed it. One thing I've noticed about the Les Mills workouts, both Pump and what I've done of Combat so far, is that the trainers don't motivate me as much as Tony Horton and Shaun T do. Maybe it's because they're made for a different audience and definitely less intense than Tony and Shaun's workouts. Either way, after 5 years of intense, I need a few months of this.

Time: 30 minutes; Calories Burned: 224; Avg Heart Rate: 106; Max Heart Rate: 127.

WEDNESDAY - AUGUST 28, 2013 - LES MILLS PUMP - Pump Revolution

Now THAT was a workout. Because I knew this one was 55 minutes, I decided to reduce my main barbell weights from 30 lbs on each side to 25 lbs on each side. It generally went OK, until I got to the bicep section. This is the first time I've done this workout, and this is the first time in the Pump program that there is a Bicep section. Jericho said to reduce the weight to the "warmup" weight, which for me is 10 to 15 lbs. I wanted to work my arms and knew I could curl 25's on each side with no problem, so that's what I went with. Big mistake. I can do 25's, but not at the speed and amount of reps they were doing. I burned out fast on that section, and by the end of it was only doing half to a third of what they were doing. This fatigue carried over to the next section, which was lunges. I was so exhausted, I had to put the bar down several times. On the ab section I used a 25 lb weight, because it was the only one I had that wasn't on the barbell. They were using 10's. I got through it, but tired out quickly. I guess this was an ego check today. Next time I play it smarter. Also, I burned 629 calories, which is similar to a P90X or Insanity workout. That's the first time that's happened with this program. By the way, I turned 56 today. I feel like I'm 26.

Time: 57 minutes: Calories Burned: 629; Avg Heart Rate: 132: Max Heart Rate: 229.

THURDSAY - AUGUST 29, 2013 - LES MILLS PUMP - Flow

Not much to say about the workout. My body is tired. I'm not eating real bad, but it could be better.

Time: 22 minutes; Calories Burned: 84; Avg Heart Rate: 87; Max Heart Rate: 105.

FRIDAY - AUGUST 30, 2013 - LES MILLS PUMP - Pump Extreme

First time doing this workout. Very similar to Pump Revolution. Again, I used 25s on each side on the Legs, Back, and Chest exercises. I used 10's on each side on the other, including the Bicep section. That went much better than Wednesday's. It was a good workout, and I can grow with it by using more weight, but the fact it was so similar to Pump Revolution left me a little less excited than when I did Pump Revolution for the first time on Wednesday.

Time: 61 minutes; Calories Burned: 581; Avg Heart Rate: 121; Max Heart Rate: 206.

SATURDAY - AUGUST 31, 2013 - LES MILLS COMBAT - Combat 60:  Extreme Cardio Fighter

Another first time workout. I liked it, but got frustrated several times because they were just jumping into choreographed move combinations without explaining them. I had to stop several times to see what they were doing. I guess that should be expected. I remember how frustrated I was learning Kenpo X moves for the first time. I'll get it down. Once I do, it looks like it'll be fun. By the way, my biceps are sore from yesterday's workout, and I was only using 10 lb weights on each side, Or maybe they're just starting to burn from Wednesday's workout, where I used 25's. I'm guessing yesterday was the culprit.

Time: 54 minutes; Calories Burned: 455; Avg Heart Rate: 112; Max Heart Rate: 141.

SUNDAY - SEPTEMBER 1, 2013 - LES MILLS PUMP - Hard Core Abs

Not much to say. I did OK.

Time: 15 minutes; Calories Burned: 66; Avg Heart Rate: 88; Max Heart Rate: 117

SUNDAY WEIGH-IN

Weight: 192.6 (+2.2 lbs); Body Fat: 20.7% (+0.2%)

Not good. I didn't think I ate that bad this week, but apparently I did.

THOUGHTS FOR THE WEEK

I thought the two new Pump workouts (Revolution and Extreme) were good. I also enjoyed the two new Combat workouts. I'm obviously not happy with the weight gain. The problem is that since I switched to the new scale a few months ago I don't seem to care as much. Before I had a point of reference for my beginning weight. I was excited. Since the new scale has me weighing about 10 lbs more than the old one, the excitement is gone. I know I need to get over it, look at it on a week to week basis, and move forward, but I haven't.

LES MILLS PUMP / COMBAT HYBRID - WEEK 5 - Week of 8/19/2013

MONDAY - AUGUST 19, 2013 - LES MILLS COMBAT - Warrior 1: Upper Body Blowout

This was supposed to be a recovery week away from the weights of Pump. I hadn't done any of the Les Mills Combat videos before, so I scheduled the extras for my recovery. This one was anything but recovery. It was 25 minutes of throwing punches with weights (I used 15 lb weights), pushups, Insanity moves (In and out abs and Ski Abs), even some Renegade Rows.. It reminded me of an Asylum workout. I kept up with most of it. Good thing it was only 25 minutes. My average heart rate got up over anything I did with Pump, and I got a good calorie burn for the time involved.

Time: 25 minutes; Calories Burned: 251; Avg Heart Rate: 125; Max Heart Rate: 205.

TUESDAY - AUGUST 20, 2013 - LES MILLS COMBAT - Shock Plyo Hiit 2

Another workout that was a bit more intense than I was expecting. A lot of pushups (again), burpees, squats. I got through it OK.

Time: 29 minutes; Calories Burned: 305; Avg Heart Rate: 127; Max Heart Rate: 146.

WEDNESDAY - AUGUST 21, 2013 - LES MILLS COMBAT - Core Attack

This was similar to an Ab Ripper X routine, but with different moves. I liked a lot of the moves, especially the one with the weight involved. I used a 10 lb weight on that one today. I think the workout was efficient. No wasted moves or time.

Time: 19 minutes; Calories Burned: 106; Avg Heart Rate: 99; max Heart Rate: 128.

THURSDAY - AUGUST 22, 2013 - LES MILLS COMBAT - Stretch and Strength

Because this is the first time I did this I wasn't familiar with many of the fighter stances the were using during the first half. I think I'll like it more once I know what I'm doing. The second half was mostly stretches I've done with P90X.

Time: 18 minutes; Calories Burned: 67; Avg Heart Rate: 86; Max Heart Rate: 101.

FRIDAY - AUGUST 23, 2013 - OFF DAY

I wasn't home all day and had no chance to do any kind of a workout. I'll do today's scheduled workout tomorrow.

SATURDAY - AUGUST 24, 2014 - LES MILLS COMBAT - 1) Warrior 2: Lower Body; and 2) Power: HIIT 1

1) WARRIOR 2: LOWER BODY

I didn't do real well on this one. There were too many moves where I had to stop and try to see what they were doing. Once I get the footwork down, I think it'll be much more effective.

Time: 29 minutes; Calories Burned: 220; Avg Heart Rate: 107; Max Heart Rate: 140.

2) POWER: HIIT 1

I waited about 30 minutes after finishing the first workout, then got into this one. It wasn't as choreographed, so I was able to do most of the exercises (but not all) without having to hesitate because I was out of synch. I used 15 lb weights on the deadrows and presses. I think I can up that in the future. The toughest moves were the burpees combined with a pushup and squats. I got through the 8 rep and 12 rep progressions, but only did another 12 during the 16 rep progression. I was simply out of gas and doing them a bit slower than those in the video. One note, and I don't like to be negative, but Regan, or Ray Ray, or whatever his name is, really needs to shut up. His constant chatter sounded canned, obvious, and got real old in a hurry. Other than that, this is a good workout.

Time: 31 minutes; Calories Burned: 319; Avg Heart Rate: 124; Max Heart Rate: 155.

SUNDAY - AUGUST 25, 2013 - WEIGH-IN

Weight:190.4; Body Fat 20.5%

I ate real bad earlier in the week. A lot of sweets, so this wasn't unexpected. I physically felt bad while eating that stuff in large quantities, so hopefully I'll remember than if I get into a state like that again.

THOUGHTS FOR THE WEEK

I'd never done any of the Combat workouts before, so I'd picked out these supplementary and bonus workouts to use as my "recovery week". I'll admit some of them were tougher than I'd anticipated. The only saving grace was that they were short, usually under 30 minutes. It'll be back to Les Mills Pump next week. I'll be using the two longer Pump workouts for the first time, and I'll be mixing in what I think are the regular Combat workouts on my Tuesday and Saturday cardio days. We'll see how it goes.

LES MILLS PUMP / COMBAT HYBRID - WEEK 4 - Week of 8/12/2013

MONDAY - AUGUST 12, 2013 - LES MILLS PUMP - Pump Challenge

An OK workout. I used 10s on the first exercise because I thought it was a warmup for some reason. I used 25s for everything else but the shoulder exercises, where I used 10s. Not much else to say. I chose this workout program because I needed something a little less intense for a few months than the P90X, Insanity, and Asylum workouts I've been doing for the last 5 years. However, only burning only 179 calories is ridiculous. I feel like I'd better turn things around in a hurry. Next week is a recovery week, then I start the 55 minute Pump workouts. I'm hoping that makes a difference.

Time: 26 minutes: Calories Burned: 179; Avg Heart Rate: 103; Max Heart Rate: 193.

TUESDAY - AUGUST 13, 2013 - LES MILLS PUMP - Combat

Today went much better than when I did this workout on Saturday. I'm beginning to get the moves down a bit better and am able to put more into it. I'm still nowhere near where I can go full blast, but it's getting there. The problem is that I've only got this workout scheduled one more time in the 90 days, and that's this Saturday.

Time: 46 minutes; Calories Burned: 329; Avg Heart Rate: 105; Max Heart Rate: 130.

WEDNESDAY - AUGUST 14, 2013 - LES MILLS PUMP - Pump and Burn

Since this is the last resistance week of my first phase, I decided to bump the weights from 25 lbs to 30 lbs on each side for the Squat section the Chest section, and Legs and Back section. I felt it a bit, but it was do-able. I have a feeling I might be a bit sore tomorrow and Friday. The only move I was really concerned with was the Clean and Press, but it went OK. I used 10s again on the warmup. They use light weights during the warmup and I've begun to believe that's a good idea. I used a 25 lb weight again on the ab section. It's a lot heavier that what they are using, but I'm handling it. It does tire my arms a bit because I'm holding it up for so long, but I'm thinking that's a good thing. I'm feeling a bit better about the program today. We'll see what happens as time goes.

Time: 35 minutes; Calories Burned: 253; Avg Heart Rate: 108; Max Heart Rate: 222.

THURDSAY - AUGUST 15, 2013 - LES MILLS PUMP - Flow

I'm taking a vacation day from work tomorrow to play golf , so this is like the beginning of my weekend. I'm stressed and mentally exhausted, and this day off is really needed. Before I started my workout I watched a few minutes of a live chat with Tony Horton. I came in the middle of it, but from what I was hearing was that he's backing off a bit from the strict regimen he's been on to chill out a bit, eat better, and try not to be perfect about everything. I needed to hear that because that's how I've been lately. I need to chill and relax and not try to be perfect too. Today's workout, a 20 minute yoga routine, was perfect for the way I was feeling. I just let things "flow" during the workout, and I must say I really enjoyed it. I didn't get frustrated if I didn't do a move perfectly. I just did the best I could, and I feel a lot better. I did notice I was a lot more flexible than I had been the last few times I did this workout. I just need to keep this feeling and attitude moving forward.

Time: 20 minutes; Calories Burned: 89; Avg Heart Rate: 90; Max Heart Rate: 106.

FRIDAY - AUGUST 16, 2013 - LES MILLS PUMP - Pump and Shred

A good workout today. I used 30s on each side again today. After trying the 30s out during the 30 minute workout on Wednesday, I was a bit concerned about how I'd hold up over 45 minutes, but it went OK. As usual, I had to take small breaks during the chest section and the lunge section, but I also had to do that with the lighter weights. Feeling good. I'm also concentrating on eating better.

Time: 47 minutes; Calories Burned: 459; Avg Heart Rate: 122; Max Heart Rate: 217.

SATURDAY - AUGUST 17, 2013 - LES MILLS PUMP - Combat

I was feeling a bit lethargic today, so I wasn't really in the mood to do this, but I got it in. The moves were coming a lot easier and the workout went well.

Time: 46 minutes; Calories Burned: 344; Avg Heart Rate: 107; Max Heart Rate: 133.

SUNDAY - AUGUST 18, 2013 - 1) LES MILLS PUMP - Les Mills Core, and; 2) WEIGH-IN

LES MILLS CORE
Not much to say on this one. Only 12 minutes. I have a hard time seeing the TV while my neck is flat on the floor, but I got most of it in OK. I have to say I like the Les Mills ab and core workouts. They're quick, simple, to the point, and I can feel the results.

Time: 12 minutes; Calories Burned: 53; Avg Heart Rate: 88; Max Heart Rate: 106.

WEIGH IN
Weight: 189.6; Body Fat: 20.0%
A drop of 3.6 lbs and .8% body fat. I had a few slip ups, but for the most part I ate good this week.

THOUGHTS FOR THE WEEK

This was definitely my best week of the program. On most of the exercises I upped my weight from 25 lbs on each side of the bar to 30 lbs on each side. It doesn't sound like a big increase, and I handled it OK, but I can feel the difference in my muscles. I've definitely been sore the last few days. I'm also pleased with the weight loss. I didn't think it was ever going to happen, but it gives me a light at the end of the tunnel.

Next week is a "Recovery Week" from the weights. I'll be trying out the Les Mills Combat workouts for the week.

LES MILLS PUMP / COMBAT HYBRID - WEEK 3 - Week of 8/5/2013

UPDATE

For various reasons I've decided to turn this 90 day Les Mills Pump round into a Les Mills Pump / Les Mills Combat Hybrid. I wasn't liking the Pump cardio workouts at all. I hadn't scheduled any recovery weeks. My right elbow is already starting to bother me, so I think a recovery week is a good idea. I have the Les Mills Combat program, but haven't done it yet. It's a 60 day program, but I couldn't see myself just doing cardio for 60 days, so mixing the two seems like a natural fit. What I'll be doing is breaking the Hybrid down into 3 phases (5 weeks, 4 weeks, 4 weeks) with a "recovery week" at the end of each phase. The recovery weeks will be the "Warrior" and "HIIT" workouts from Combat. Beginning with phase 2 of the Hybrid, I'll be substituting the regular Les Mills Combat workouts (Combat 30, Combat 45, Combat 60, Combat 60 Live) in for the Les Mills Pump cardio workouts.

MONDAY - AUGUST 5. 2013 - LES MILLS PUMP - Pump Challenge

I used 25s again. Everything went well, except for the lunges, which are tough for me because I can't bend my ankles to get my knee on the ground.

Time: 26 minutes; Calories Burned: 207; Avg Heart Rate: 112; Max Heart Rate: 210.

TUESDAY - AUGUST 6, 2013 - LES MILLS PUMP - Combat

This workout is from the Les Mills Pump program, and I'm assuming it was the inspiration for the Les Mills Combat program. I enjoyed it. It was certainly better than the Step and Sports Attack workouts. It was the first time I did it, so I was a bit uncoordinated on many of the moves. I think once I get them down, it'll be a much more fun workout.

Time:46 minutes; Calories Burned: 347; Avg Heart Rate: 107; Max Heart Rate: 127.

WEDNESDAY - AUGUST 7, 2013 - LES MILLS PUMP - Pump and Burn

I tried playing it smart by only using the recommended 10 lb weights during the warmup, then increasing it to 25s on each side during the regular workout. It seemed to work a lot better. I even used a 25 lb weight on the ab crunches with no problems. I'm seriously trying to eat better but I'm all over the place. I can't get it together. I'm just not giving myself good available options when it's time to eat. You would think after all these years I'd have it figured out, but I don't. I'm also concerned about the low calorie burns on these workouts. With P90X, Insanity, Asylum, a calorie burn of 400 was horrible. I don't think I've gotten any where near 400 on any of these workouts. However, I can feel the muscles in my shoulders and legs getting stronger, so that's why I'm continuing on with this.

Time: 35 minutes; Calories Burned: 267; Avg Heart Rate: 109; Max Heart Rate: 206.

THURSDAY - AUGUST 8, 2013 - LES MILLS PUMP - Flow

Relaxing, but still not as flexible as I'd like. Maybe that's just the way it is, but I'll still work on it.

Time: 20 minutes; Calories Burned: 82; Avg Heart Rate: 88; Max Heart Rate: 106.

FRIDAY - AUGUST 9, 2013 -LES MILLS PUMP - Pump and Shred

This may be the first time in this program that I felt like I got a workout anywhere near P90X or Asylum. I used 25s on each side again. I only rested a few time during the Chest section. It's my goal to get through that section without a rest.

Time: 47 minutes; Calories Burned: 484; Avg Heart Rate: 127; Max Heart Rate: 210.

SATURDAY - AUGUST 10, 2013 - LES MILLS PUMP - Combat

I was actually looking forward to doing this one today. I'd been through it for the first time on Tuesday, figured I knew the moves a bit, and could go harder. That worked for about 30 minutes. I wasn't totally familiar with what I was doing, but was certainly doing better than Tuesday. However, with about 15 minutes left I hit a mental wall. They started doing a series of moves I had a hard time following. I was getting frustrated and totally lost interest at that point. I finished out the workout but my heart just wasn't in it.

Time: 46 minutes; Calories Burned: 336; Avg Heart Rate: 106; Max Heart Rate: 131.

SUNDAY - AUGUST 11, 2013 - 1) LES MILLS PUMP - Hard Core Abs;  and 2) Weigh In

HARD CORE ABS
Not much to say. I did OK. It's a good little routine.

Time: 15 minutes; Calories Burned: 81; Avg Heart Rate: 95; Max Heart Rate: 140.

WEIGH-IN
Weight: 193.2; Body Fat: 20.8%
No change in either number. I'm really frustrated with myself on the nutrition end. It seems like when I got the new scale about 4 months ago, and it consistently read 10 lbs more than the old one, I lost my "why". Weight isn't the ultimate thing here, but it is some kind of a measuring stick, and right now it's depressing. I'm at the point where I feel no matter what I do, it isn't going to matter, and that's a problem. And I need to get over it.

THOUGHTS FOR THE WEEK

I'm still not sold on this program. It seems like a "one trick pony". All the strength workouts have pretty much the same moves in them, just with different lengths of time. The two cardio workouts I did the first two weeks were horrible. I replaced them with the Combat workout this week. It was a bit better, but I totally lost interest in it on Saturday. I'm going to keep plugging away though. I think if I saw better results on the scale I'd feel more motivated, but I'm not. I will admit I do feel my muscles a bit more though. That, and my "no quit" attitude, are the only things keeping me going.
