MONDAY - JULY 29, 2013 - Pump Challenge
Today I used 25 lb weights on each side for all the exercises except for the shoulders, where I used 10s. I didn't have any problems with the weight, and it almost seemed easier than using the 10s I used last week. The heavier weight seemed to ground me more. I'll see how sore I am tomorrow.
Time: 26 minutes; Calories Burned: 241; Avg Heart Rate: 119; Max Heart Rate: 218.
TUESDAY - JULY 30, 2013 - Step
I worked up a good sweat, but I'm still not a big fan of this routine. There's a lot of jumping up and down off of the bench, which is tough for me because of my bad knees and bad balance. I did realize partway through that I still had my bench set to the third level, and they'd gone down to one level, so I guess I was making it harder on myself. I'll try moving down to level one next time.
Time: 32 minutes; Calories Burned: 289; Avg Heart Rate: 117; Max Heart Rate: 146.
WEDNESDAY - JULY 31, 2013 - Pump and Burn
I used 25s on each side again on everything. I thought I was in trouble during the warmup because I could feel it, but I did OK. I had to rest of few times during the chest exercises. Again, we'll see if I'm sore in the next few days. I didn't really have too much soreness after Monday's Pump Challenge. I thought it would have been much worse.
Time: 35 minutes; Calories Burned: 282; Avg Heart Rate: 113; Max Heart Rate: 210.
THURSDAY - AUGUST 1, 2013 - Flow
It's August 1st and I'm going to commit to make this a good month nutritionally. The workout went well, I'm still not used to the sequences, and had to keep looking up at the TV to see what they were doing, but I'll get there. I realized I still have a ways to go with my flexibility while doing the floor exercises.
Time: 20 minutes; Calories Burned: 107; Avg Heart Rate: 94; Max Heart Rate: 111.
FRIDAY - AUGUST 2, 2013 - Off Day
I had an all day golf excursion. By the time I got home I was whipped. I felt if I'd done the workout my form would have been bad and I could have done more harm that good, so I chose to push off the workout until Saturday.
SATURDAY - AUGUST 3, 2013 - 1) Pump and Shred and 2) Sports Attack
Pump and Shred
This is the workout I was supposed to have done yesterday. I did this one in the morning. I'm continuing my trend of using 25 lbs on each side of the barbell for all the moves. I had to stop several times during the chest moves and also briefly during some of the lunges. Otherwise I was OK. I'm dripping in sweat at the end and I can feel my arms quivering a bit. As I was playing golf yesterday, I could feel the muscles in my shoulders, quads, and calves were a lot stronger, so I think something is working.
Time: 47 minutes; Calories Burned: 386; Avg Heart Rate: 114; Max Heart Rate: 220.
Sports Attack
I did this one in the late afternoon. I remembered I wasn't impressed with this thing last week, but I couldn't remember why. After doing it, the reasons came back to me. Aside from about 30 seconds worth of actual "sports" moves (and that's stretching the definition of "sports"), this thing is nothing more than a cheesy aerobics class. I did work up a sweat, and did get winded a bit, but I hated it. If one of my friends had walked in while I was doing this, I'd have been embarrassed. That's a rough thing to say, but it's how I feel.
Time: 30 minutes: Calories Burned: 229; Avg Heart Rate: 110; Max Heart Rate: 135.
SUNDAY - AUGUST 4, 2013 - Les Mills Core and Weigh-In
Les Mills Core
Loved it. Only about 12 minutes long, but I felt each move. Very effective.
Time: 13 minutes; Calories Burned: 62; Avg Heart Rate: 92; Max Heart Rate:110.
Weigh-In
Weight: 193.2; Body Fat:20.8%
An increase of 2.2 lbs and .5% body fat. Wrong direction. I need to make the commitment to stop it.

LES MILLS PUMP - WEEK 1 - Week of 7/22/13
MONDAY - JULY 22, 2013 - Pump Challenge
This was my first workout in 5 years without Tony Horton or Shaun T leading the way. My first impressions weren't good. Too many smiley people who didn't look like they were working hard enough to break a sweat. I'd rather watch people struggling like I am. I had to come home and immediately jump into the workout because I had to be somewhere this evening, so I was feeling a bit rushed. It was a short workout, but I was still interrupted twice by things. I turned on the background music too loud so I couldn't hear the trainer's cues during the exercises. During the last set they were holding the weight plates in their hands, but I found out the plates I got from Beachbody with the program didn't have the gripping holes in the same places, so I couldn't hold them properly. It's not a big deal because I can use dumbbells instead, but it was just annoying. All this made the first day feel really disjointed. On top of all that, I only burned 204 calories. I did look at the schedule and it looks like most of the early workouts are only 20 minutes long, and there are a lot of "Rest" and "Walk" days built in. If I'm only burning 200 calories in a day, 5 days a week, that's simply not going to cut it. For now though, I'm going to give it a chance.
Time: 26 minutes; Calories Burned: 204; Avg Heart Rate: 109; Max Heart Rate: 160.
TUESDAY - JULY 23, 2013 - Step
This was a cardio workout. I worked up a bit more of a sweat than I'd anticipated, but it felt like I was at an 80's aerobics class. Not my cup of tea. I was a bit slow on a few of the moves because I had to watch what they were doing, and I was a little hesitant to be jumping up and down on the step bench because I didn't want to miss it and twist an ankle. I also had a bit of a problem with the step lunges at the end, simply because I have no balance on lunges. Other than that, I was OK.
Time: 31 minutes; Calories Burned: 302; Avg Heart Rate: 120; Max Heart Rate: 141.
WEDNESDAY - JULY 24, 2013 - Pump and Burn
I'm getting a bit nervous here. A 35 minute workout. I barely broke a sweat and only burned 176 calories. It's barely worth my time, and I feel if things don't get tougher in a hurry, I'll lose a lot of what I worked the last five years for. I understand the premise of this program is high reps with light weights. This week I'm using 10's on each side for all the exercises because that's roughly the median of what they recommend, and I'm not familiar with the exercises. I'm going to blame the low calorie burn on that. Next week I'm going to bump up the weight significantly to see what happens. Maybe to 25's on each side.
Time: 35 minutes; Calories Burned: 176; Avg Heart Rate: 94; Max Heart Rate: 116.
THURSDAY - JULY 25, 2013 - Flow
A 20 minute Yoga workout. I loved it. Very relaxing, and it would have been more so if I hadn't had to keep looking up to see what they were doing. Most of the poses I was familiar with, but it was neat to see them get into those poses in different ways than I'd been familiar with. It put a whole new spin on things, and I think actually improved my balance a slight bit.
Time: 20 minutes; Calories Burned: 65; Avg Heart Rate: 83; Max Heart Rate: 98.
FRIDAY - JULY 26, 2013 - Pump and Shred
Finally a workout where I feel worked out. I still only used 10 lb weights on each side for each exercise because I'm still getting used to the moves, but more so because I may be going hang gliding tomorrow and I didn't want to make the long drive being sore as hell. I can see that happening with this workout, and the increased weight will happen next week.
Time: 47 minutes; Calories Burned: 290; Avg Heart Rate: 99; Max Heart Rate: 128.
SATURDAY - JULY 27, 2013 - Sports Attack
Didn't get to go Hang Gliding because of the weather. Felt sluggish all day, and did this in the early evening. I'll admit I didn't give my best. Just wasn't feeling it.
Time:29 minutes; Calories Burned: 216; Avg Heart Rate: 107; Max Heart Rate: 135.
SUNDAY - JULY 28, 2013 - Hard Core Abs and Weigh-In
HARD CORE ABS
This routine was OK but nowhere near the intensity of an Ab Ripper X or Ab Shredder. I got almost all the moves in except a few of the side plank things where I lost my balance a bit.
Time: 15 minutes; Calories Burned: 76; Avg Heart Rate: 92; Max Heart Rate: 119.
WEIGH-IN
I'm going to be using the new scale from here. I think it's more accurate.
Weight: 191.0; Body Fat: 20.3%
A gain of .8 lbs and .3% body fat. I'm not sure where it all came from. I'll just have to watch myself.
THOUGHTS FOR THE WEEK
This is the first week in over 5 years where I wasn't doing a Tony Horton or Shaun T workout. My initial impressions weren't good. I'm not used to the new cast and their "smiley energy". I also hardly burned any calories on any of the workouts. As I stated earlier I used very light weights because everything was new. New week I'm going to significantly increase the weight and see what happens.

HYBRID - Final Thoughts
My entire Hybrid Schedule
My Story
FINAL THOUGHTS ON THE HYBRID
I guess I can sum it up in three words: I LOVED IT!. Would I do it again? Yes, in a heartbeat. Would I change anything? Probably not.
I did have to take a week off in the middle of my Week 8 schedule due to illness, but I picked up where I left off and did all the workouts. Without that break, I'm not 100% sure my body would have made it through Week 12 without breaking down, but I'm pretty sure I'd have been OK. I've gone that long before..
It was great going into each week with a fresh schedule of what I was going to do. I never got bored. There simply wasn't enough time to get tired of doing the same routines over and over again, because I wasn't doing them over and over again.
Any surprises? Yes. I think the toughest week I had was the P90X+ week, and I wasn't expecting that. I'd never done Upper Plus and Total Body Plus before without hitting pause. This time I didn't hit pause, and they destroyed me. Putting Core Synergistics in with that week didn't help.
Toughest Workouts? Two stand out, and they're similar. Insanity Upper Body Weight Training and Asylum Volume 2's Upper Elite. The reason I thought they were the toughest is because Shaun T doesn't give you any rest in between moves on either workout. That's the same reason I thought Upper Plus and Total Body Plus were tough. Just relentless with no breaks. I'm not sure going that hard without any rest is smart, or even effective, but that's what I did, and that's what I'm basing it on. Of course Chest and Back kills me every time too..
One other thing I need to mention: I never hit the "Pause" button once throughout the entire Hybrid, and still didn't miss any of the exercises.
I only have one regret, and it's a big one: I didn't eat well. I still can't commit to consistently eating healthier than I do. It's not horrible, but it could be a lot better. I know when I concentrate on it I feel better, but I'm a stress eater, and the stresses of life are always there. At some point I'm trying to make the "light bulb" go off so I can figure things out, but that hasn't happened yet. I think I just need to sit down and think it through. A lot of that goes beyond exercise, but it's still intertwined. I know one thing. If I had eaten well, my results would have been off the charts with this schedule.
WHAT'S NEXT?
I'm not sure. I just purchased 4 new Beachbody workout programs: Les Mills Pump, Les Mills Combat. Tai Cheng, and Focus T25. I'm trying to decide between Pump and T25. I'll miss Tony Horton for the next few months, but I know I'll always go back to P90X at some point.

HYBRID - WEEK 13 - YOGA / STRETCH / RECOVERY - Week of 7/15/2013
My entire Hybrid Schedule
My Story
MONDAY - JULY 15, 2013 - P90X2 - X2 Yoga
Beginning of the final week of the Hybrid, and it's all about letting my body recover. Today's workout was a good start. It felt good all day, knowing I wasn't going to have to beat my body up for a while. The workout went well. I was relaxed throughout. I wasn't perfect, but as Tony says at the beginning of the workout, "It's not about being perfect".
Time: 67 minutes; Calories Burned: 436; Avg Heart Rate: 102; Max Heart Rate: 132.
TUESDAY - JULY 16, 2013 - TONY HORTON ONE ON ONE - Fountain of Youth
In general, I'd say this this my favorite of the Yoga routines I have. I've never done Yoga on back to back days, so I curious to see how I'd feel. It felt great.
Time: 47 minutes; Calories Burned: 257; Avg Heart Rate: 96; Max Heart Rate: 221.
WEDNESDAY - JULY 17, 2013 - P90X2 - Recovery and Mobility
Another relaxing workout. I'm still not "getting" the foam rolling, but I feel good.
Time: 57 minutes; Calories Burned: 215; Avg Heart Rate: 86; Max Heart Rate: 110.
THURSDAY - JULY 18, 2013 - P90X - X Stretch
You would think with all the Yoga and recovery I've been doing this week that I'd be really flexible, but I wasn't. I couldn't get deep into either the Camel or Hero poses. Otherwise, I was OK. Bad day eating at work. One of our vendors brought in a bunch of cookies for us. I've been eating pretty good lately and staying away from that stuff, but I caved today and indulged. It's not the end of the world, but I need to have a little bit more willpower.
Time: 57 minutes; Calories Burned: 247; Avg Heart Rate: 90; Max Heart Rate: 112.
FRIDAY - JULY 19, 2013 - TONY HORTON ONE ON ONE - Patience Hummingbird
I may have changed my mind. This may now be my favorite Yoga workout. I'd forgotten how simple this one is. Just the basic poses. A relatively short workout, and very relaxing. Loved it.
Time: 36 minutes; Calories Burned: 236; Avg Heart Rate: 102; Max Heart Rate: 129.
SATURDAY - JULY 20, 2013 - P90X - Yoga X
And that's a wrap!! Final workout of the Hybrid. It went OK. Again, I got a bit shaky during the last few sets of vinyasas. I'm not sure why that's been the case the last few times I did this workout, but it has. My balance poses were almost perfect on my right leg, and less than perfect on my left leg. Crane was so-so. Nice calorie burn to finish things up.
Time: 92 minutes; Calories Burned: 702; Avg Heart Rate: 109; Max Heart Rate: 138.
SUNDAY - JULY 21, 2013 - Weigh In
Old Scale - Weight: 177.8; Body Fat: 22.9%. An increase of 1.5 lbs and .5% body fat.
New Scale - Weight: 190.2; Body Fat: 20.0%. An incease of 2 lbs and .2% body fat.
Obviously an increase on both scales. I tried to eat pretty good for the week, but I think the cookies got to me. I ate a lot of them. Also, I wasn't burning a lot of calories on workouts this week. A disappointing way to finish, but it's my fault.
Overall Weight Loss during the Hybrid: 1.1 lbs
Overall Body Fat Loss during the Hybrid: 0.1%
THOUGHTS FOR THE WEEK
I originally scheduled this week as a recovery week at the end because I felt my body would have been really beat up after the previous 12 weeks, with no recovery built in. As I entered this week I wondered if all that Yoga and stretching back-to-back was going to be overkill. It turns out it wasn't. My original thoughts were right on. It was a great week, much needed, and something I'd consider doing again when I feel my body needs it.

HYBRID - WEEK 12 - INSANITY (Month 2) - Week of 7/8/2013
My entire Hybrid Schedule
My Story
MONDAY - JULY 8, 2013 - INSANITY - Fast and Furious
Starting a tough week with a "teaser" workout. It's only 22 minutes long, but you are working almost the entire time. I was tiring a bit during the warm-up, but once the meat of the workout started I was doing much better, and I finished strong.
Time: 22 minutes; Calories Burned: 186; Avg Heart Rate: 117; Max Heart Rate: 145.
TUESDAY - JULY 9, 2013 - INSANITY - Max Interval Circuit
I knew this was one of the tougher Month 2 workouts, along with tomorrow's Max Interval Plyo. I also believe it's the longest. When I got home from work, I didn't give myself a lot of time before I got into it because I wanted to get it over with. It went very well. I kept up with most of the cast most of the time. Yes, I got winded a few times and had to stop for a few seconds, but I got right back into it. I'm very happy with how I did.
Time: 59 minutes; Calories Burned: 693; Avg Heart Rate: 134; Max Heart Rate: 158.
WEDNESDAY - JULY 10, 2013 - INSANITY - Max Interval Plyo
Another tough one, and probably the last beast of the Hybrid. I did as well as I did yesterday. Winded, and having to stop a few times, but that's normal. I'm still concentrating on really eating well this week.
Time: 55 minutes; Calories Burned: 604; Avg Heart Rate: 130; Max Heart Rate: 160.
THURSDAY - JULY 11, 2013 - INSANITY - Max Recovery
Hey, Shaun T! I don't want to be doing no pushups during my recovery day. I remembered this workout wasn't all stretching and relaxing, but I was really getting annoyed with it part way through. I know it's good for me, but I just wasn't in the mood to be holding uncomfortable poses forever, or repeating others over and over and over again. There was one point when we were doing what seemed to be endless sets of pushups that I purposely skipped a set just out of spite. I'm done ranting. I'll get over myself.. Back to your regularly scheduled programming.
Time: 47 minutes; Calories Burned: 359; Avg Heart Rate: 108; Max Heart Rate: 194.
FRIDAY - JULY 12, 2013 - INSANITY - Max Cardio Conditioning
While this workout overall is not as tough as Max Interval Circuit or Max Interval Plyo, there is a 6 minute sequence midway through this routine that is a lot tougher than any 6 minutes of either of those workouts. I'm drenched in sweat as I type this about 15 minutes after finishing.
Time: 47 minutes; Calories Burned: 505; Avg Heart Rate: 128; Max Heart Rate: 149.
SATURDAY - JULY 13, 2013 - INSANITY - Max Interval Sports Training
Today was the last main workout of the Hybrid. Tomorrow is an ab workout and next week is Yoga, Stretch, and Recovery all week. This routine is tough in areas, but it's also a lot more fun than most of the other Insanity workouts. For some reason (golf yesterday?) my legs felt heavy and a bit sore, so I had to stop briefly a few times, and move slower than those on the video at other times, but overall I did well. When comparing my numbers today to the four times I did this workout last year, I noticed my calorie burn and heart rate numbers were significantly lower this time. I'm not sure why, but maybe I wasn't continuously pushing it as much as back then. Either way, I worked up a good sweat again.
Time: 54 minutes; Calories Burned: 453; Avg Heart Rate: 113; Max Heart Rate: 140.
SUNDAY - JULY 14, 2013 - INSANITY - Insane Abs and WEIGH-IN
INSANE ABS
I did OK. While doing the exercises sitting in the "C-sit" position I found my quads were burning more than my abs, so I had a come out quite a few times. Otherwise, things went well.
Time: 33 minutes; Calories Burned: 286; Avg Heart Rate: 114; Max Heart Rate: 140.
WEIGH-IN
Old Scale - Weight: 176.3; Body Fat: 22.4% - A drop of 1.1 lbs and .3% body fat
New Scale - Weight: 188.2; Body Fat: 19.8% - A drop of .8 lbs and no change in body fat
I ate pretty good all week, but had a real bad Friday evening. Feeling better most of the week.
THOUGHTS FOR THE WEEK
I think I mentioned this when I last did Insanity in Week 4: I enjoyed the week, and I feel good, but I'm glad I don't have do it again next week. I got through the two toughest workouts on Tuesday and Wednesday with no problems, and they were the only ones I was concerned about.
All the tough resistance and cardio workouts are done for this Hybrid. Next week is some much needed Yoga, Stretch, and Recovery workouts.

HYBRID - WEEK 11 - INSANITY: THE ASYLUM (VOLUME 2) - Week of 7/1/2013
My entire Hybrid Schedule
My Story
MONDAY - JULY 1, 2013 - INSANITY: THE ASYLUM (VOLUME 2) - X Trainer
This is one of the tougher workouts in the entire Hybrid. There is a lot of choreographed agility moves with the ladder. I hadn't done this workout since early March 2013, so I was a bit stale and moved a little slower than those on the video on those moves, but I did better than expected. The real tough ones are the Matrix Pushups (60 of them), and the Pyramid Weights. I did all of the pushups, but did have to go to my knees quite a few times when holding the 10 seconds planks in between the sets. I used 25 lb weights on the Pyramid Weights and completed all the reps with no problems. All in all, I was happy with the effort and what I was able to do.
Time: 49 minutes; Calories Burned: 511; Avg Heart Rate: 126; Max Heart Rate: 160.
TUESDAY - JULY 2, 2013 - INSANITY: THE ASYLUM (VOLUME 2) - Upper Elite
This may very well be the toughest workout I have in my arsenal. 60 minutes of Pushups (including a lot of one arm pushups), Weights, even some agility moves to break things up. What makes it tough is that there are really no breaks, and I never hit the "pause" button. There's a few times he says "grab some water", but by the time you get the bottle up to your lips, he's on to the next exercise. Just relentless, but I got through it. I probably did a few less reps in some areas than some on the video, but for the most part I kept up. I used 25 lb weights on all the weight exercises. The last time I did this workout in March, I used 30's, but I noticed my numbers were a lot lower back then. I think going down 5 lbs allowed me to do much more. I'm glad this one is over with.
Time: 60 minutes; Calories Burned: 629; Avg Heart Rate: 126; Max Heart Rate: 222.
WEDNESDAY - JULY 3, 2013 - INSANITY: THE ASYLUM (VOLUME 2) - Power Legs
I didn't remember this workout being this hard. I did my best, but there were times when I wasn't able to keep up with those on the video, especially the agility moves on the ladder. I'm still trying to eat better, and I'm feeling a bit better because of it.
Time: 50 minutes; Calories Burned: 482; Avg Heart Rate: 121; Max Heart Rate: 146.
THURSDAY - JULY 4, 2013 - INSANITY: THE ASYLUM (VOLUME 2) - Off Day Stretch
July 4th. A perfect day for a stretch workout. It was relaxing.
Time: 30 minutes; Calories Burned: 116; Avg Heart Rate: 87; Max Heart Rate: 104.
FRIDAY - JULY 5, 2013 - REST
Day off of work, so I played golf this morning. I had a bit of a fever before I left, and it got worse during the day. It was hot and muggy as hell, and when I got home I felt horrible. I was really shaky and weak, so I decided not to do the workout, and instead spent most of the day in bed.
SATURDAY - JULY 6, 2013 - 1) INSANITY: THE ASYLUM (VOLUME 2) - Back and 6 Pack; 2) INSANITY: THE ASYLUM (VOLUME 2) - Championship / Sudden Death OT
1) INSANITY: THE ASYLUM (VOLUME 2) - Back and 6 Pack
I woke up early this morning feeling a bit better after the long rest. I decided to do Back and 6 Pack, which I had scheduled for yesterday, and did it at 7am. I was still a bit weak, so I was down on a few reps here and there, but overall it went well. Thankfully, it's a shorter workout than most of the others.
Time: 38 minutes; Calories Burned: 316; Avg Heart Rate: 113; Max Heart Rate: 204.
2) INSANITY: THE ASYLUM (VOLUME 2) - Championship / Sudden Death OT
I started this one about 6pm. I don't think I've ever done two full workouts in one day before, but it didn't seem to be a problem. I used 25 lb weights on the Weightlifting section and got all the reps in. I also got in six full circuits during OT, which is my high. Overall, I think this is the best I've done on this workout. I'm still not as quick as they are on the agility drills, but I'll work on it.
Time: 55 minutes; Calories Burned: 531; Avg Heart Rate: 122; Max Heart Rate: 151.
SUNDAY - JULY 7, 2013 - INSANITY: THE ASYLUM (VOLUME 2) - Ab Shredder and Weigh-In
Ab Shredder
I didn't do to well on Ab Shredder. I kept coming out of plank position earlier than I needed to because I wasn't toughing it out. My body feels like crap, and I just didn't feel like putting it through more pain. Not a good thing.
Time: 20 minutes; Calories Burned: 182; Avg Heart Rate: 115; Max Heart Rate: 133.
Weigh-In
Old Scale - Weight: 177.4 lbs; Body Fat: 22.7%
New Scale - Weight: 189.0 lbs; Body Fat: 19.8%
An increase of 2.7 lbs and .6% body fat on the Old Scale. An increase of 1.0 lbs and a decrease of .1% body fat on the New Scale. I ate an entire frozen pizza yesterday, and indulged a bit on the 4th, but not too much. Stress eating. I feel sluggish physically, and am pissed off at myself mentally. I just have to do better. I went grocery shopping this afternoon and made better choices.
THOUGHTS FOR THE WEEK
Things were OK during the first half of the week, but stresses of everyday life caught up with me on Friday and Saturday. I also wasn't feeling well on Friday, which didn't help things. These Asylum workouts are tough. My body is sore, and I'm tired of it being sore. Just venting for now. I know it's beneficial in the long run.
